Pop Idols. People adulate
them. Individuals exploit them. People
stalk them. It is unfortunate that pop
idols must keep their innocence in order
to appear like a good role model. In the
anime movie Perfect Blue, a pop idol
named Mima Kirigoe leaves a pop group
called Cham in a surprising move to
become an actress. |
In the movie, pop idols do not make a lot
of money. This can be seen when Mima goes
home after her last concert. Perhaps this
is the reason why she left. Mima gets her
career started with a role in a horror
drama called "Double Bind."
Unfortunately, some of her own fans did
not like her decision. One by one, each
of Mimas acquaintances are killed
in an appalling manner. One by one, each
of Mimas actions are secretly and
detailedly recorded in a fan site called
"Mimas Room." Her life on
the set eventually becomes closer and
closer to becoming her own life. As the
movie draws to a close, Mima finds out
who these fans are and how their
obsession with her becomes a fight for
her own life.
Perfect Blues storyline, which was
written by Yoshikazu Takeuchi and
directed by Satoshi Kon, is one of the
best Ive ever seen in any anime. It
is cleverly written and contains many
symbolisms. A normal viewer would never
notice any of the hints that the movie
gives to you as it shifts to the next
scene. The "innocent"
atmosphere quickly changes into a
frightening one as the film progress.
This is Satoshi Kon's first anime film.
Beautifully directed, I must say. Highly
recommended.

Rating
This
anime is a classic. Satoshi Kon's entry
in the Anime industry is comparable to
the works of Alfred Hitchcock, as many
say.
